Produce Well Oklahoma State University (OSU)
conducted research on a commercial herd in Wyoming that evaluated Salers-Hereford,
Angus-Hereford and Hereford females during their fi rst three years of
production. The cows were managed under harsh range conditions as a group
for the entire length of the study. Data was collected and analyzed by
OSU personnel. The results were dramatic: there was 153 pounds of calf
weaned MORE per cow exposed advantage for Salers-cross compared to Angus
cross females over Salers have unbeatable calving-ease genetics. The American Salers Association has 92,000-plus calving ease scores on two-year-old females, 94.6% percent calved unassisted. More live calves = more profit with each live calf. By cutting death loss at birth in half, producers could increase gross returns by $32.77 for each cow. It's common for commercial herds who utilize Salers to report a 98+% live calf crop. |
